VYN is a private registration service, not a DMV office. We are licensed by the California DMV as a registration service (Occupational License #82554) and we do the paperwork for you. Government fees are set by the DMV and are separate from our service fee.
California expects new residents to register their vehicle within 20 days of becoming a resident. Residency starts when you take a job here, enrol a child in school, or claim a homeowner’s exemption — not when you feel settled. Miss the window and the state adds late penalties on top of the registration fees.

Registering a car from another state is four transactions in a row, not one. We run the whole sequence so you are not sent back and forth.
A licensed verifier physically inspects the vehicle and confirms the VIN matches the out-of-state paperwork. This is the step people do not expect, and it is the one that has to happen where the vehicle is. We are licensed to do it.
California will not register most out-of-state vehicles without a current smog certificate from a California station. A test passed in your old state does not carry over.
The other state’s title has to be surrendered so California can issue its own. If a lender is holding it, California requests it from them — that is normal and it does not stop the registration.
Once the first three are done, the registration itself is straightforward, and you leave with California plates and a registration card.

Cars are built to one of two emissions standards: a 50-state version that meets California’s rules, and a 49-state federal version that does not. The label under the hood says which one you have.
A 49-state vehicle bought new out of state generally cannot be registered in California until it has enough miles on it — around 7,500. Older vehicles are treated differently. This is the one thing worth checking before you drive a car across the country, and we can check it from the label and the VIN.
