VYN is a private registration service, not a DMV office. We are licensed by the California DMV as a registration service (Occupational License #82554) and we do the paperwork for you. Government fees are set by the DMV and are separate from our service fee.

Transfers we handle

Every one of these is a title transfer, and every one of them needs different paperwork.

  • Private party sales
  • Gift transfers
  • Family transfers
  • Inherited vehicles
  • Lien releases and lienholder changes
  • Auction and dealer purchases

How it works

Tell us what you have

Call, text, or send the short form. A photo of your notice is usually enough for us to know what is needed.

We check the record

We look at what the DMV is asking for on your vehicle and tell you exactly which documents to bring.

We file the transfer

Bring or send the signed title and the supporting forms and we handle the filing, so ownership actually moves into the right name.

What to bring

  • The California title, signed and released by the seller
  • A bill of sale, or the purchase price and the date of sale
  • The odometer reading, for newer vehicles
  • A valid driver license or ID
  • Any lien release from the lender, if there was a loan

Not sure?

A private sale, a gift and an inherited vehicle genuinely need different documents. Send us a photo of the title and we will tell you which set yours needs.

Fees, use tax and requirements vary. What is owed depends on the purchase price, the relationship between the two parties, the vehicle record and how long ago the sale happened. We confirm your exact situation before anything is filed.

What it costs

Two separate numbers, and we never blend them into one.

Our service fee

What VYN charges to handle the transaction for you. We quote it before anything is filed, so you always know it up front. Call and we will give you the number in a minute — free, no obligation.

DMV fees

Set by the state, not by us. On a transfer they can include use tax based on the purchase price, plus transfer and registration fees. We show you the exact amount, always separate from our fee.

The three things that go wrong

The 10-day deadline, and the seller's 5 days

California expects the buyer to apply for the transfer within 10 days of the sale, and the seller to file a release of liability within 5. Once you are past the buyer’s window the DMV adds a transfer penalty, and it steps up again the further past 30 days it goes.

The seller’s release matters just as much. Until it is filed, tickets and tolls on that vehicle still point back at the person who sold it.

When a smog certificate is required

Most changes of ownership in California need a smog certification, and it is usually the seller’s responsibility. There are real exemptions: transfers between certain family members, vehicles four model years old or newer, and electric vehicles among them.

We check which side owes the certificate before a sale falls apart over it.

The seller never signed, or the title is gone

A title signed in the wrong place, signed by someone whose name is not on it, or corrected with white-out will be rejected. Send us a photo before you sign anything you are unsure about — it is far easier than undoing it later.

If the title is missing entirely, the transfer starts with a duplicate title. That is its own DMV transaction and we can start it at the same time.

Questions people ask

Where are you located?

3411 Tweedy Blvd Ste E, South Gate, CA 90280. We are open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

How long do I have to transfer a title in California?

The buyer is expected to apply within 10 days of the sale. After that the DMV adds a penalty that grows the longer it waits, so it is worth handling quickly.

Can you transfer the title if the seller is not with me?

Usually yes, as long as the seller signed and released the title correctly. The seller does not normally need to be present. If a signature is missing or in the wrong place, we will tell you what it takes to fix it.

Do I pay use tax on a gifted vehicle?

Gifts between certain family members are often exempt, but it depends on the relationship and on the paperwork being filled in correctly. We check your case before anything is filed.

Are DMV fees included in your service fee?

No. Government fees are set by the DMV and are always separate from our service fee. They depend on your vehicle and the transaction.

Are you a DMV office?

No. We are a privately owned business licensed by the California DMV as a registration service, Occupational License #82554. We are not a branch of the DMV.
